– Which glue for sensitive materials such as polystyrene or PVC?
– How to remove the mounting adhesive?
Each of us sooner or later will face the challenge of choosing a mounting adhesive. As it turns out, this is not a difficult task. You just need to prepare properly. Before we go to the store for glue, let's make sure what the materials we want to glue are made of. This is important because adhesives as chemical agents can react chemically with a given material. We will find out what material it is from the product label.
How to choose glue for baseboards?
We have two solutions to choose from. One cheaper - ordinary solvent mounting glue, which we can use for wooden moldings and some plastic moldings. The downside of this solution is that cheap adhesives are not flexible. After some time, there is a risk that the adhesive will simply break off under the influence of impact or environmental conditions. It is much better to choose a solution that is not much more expensive and reliable for years - mounting adhesives based on MS polymer. These are products that, after hardening, are fully flexible and resistant to weather conditions and water. What's more, they can be used for both wooden and plastic slats. It is also worth choosing adhesives that provide high initial bonding strength (high tack). In this case, we do not need to support the slats so that they do not bounce during the glue curing process (usually several hours).
Where should flexible mounting adhesives be used?
Flexible assembly adhesives should be used for all materials that can change their volume. An example would be a mirror glued to the wall in a newly commissioned building. Such a building can work for a long time, so you should use an elastic adhesive to stick the mirror to prevent possible damage in the future. The same applies to any outdoor work. Under the influence of temperature changes, a large part of materials contracts or expands. If we use ordinary assembly glue, which is not flexible, we will start gluing again after some time.
What are chemically non-aggressive adhesives?
Chemically non-aggressive adhesives are new technology adhesives based on substances that are safe for humans and the environment. Many of them are safe even for allergy sufferers. Such adhesives can be used for many materials, even sensitive ones such as polystyrene or mirrors.
Can mounting adhesives be used outdoors?
Of course! Just pay attention to whether:
- the glue is water resistant
- what is the thermal resistance of the adhesive
- whether the adhesive is flexible.
Typically, you should look for adhesives whose heat resistance is between approx. -40°C and approx. +80°C.
Which adhesive for sensitive materials such as polystyrene, natural stone, PVC or mirrors?
Chemically non-aggressive adhesives such as Adelastic and Adelastic CR should be used for bonding sensitive materials. These are products dedicated to difficult materials. They guarantee that the mirror will not destroy its silver coating under the influence of gluing, polystyrene will not be burned, and PVC and natural stone will retain their original color.
How to remove the mounting adhesive?
Cured assembly adhesive in most cases can only be removed mechanically, i.e. with a knife or scrapers. There are also chemicals that can help remove the old adhesive coating, but be careful when using them. Their composition is based mainly on strong solvents that can damage or discolor the glued materials.
In conclusion, the choice of mounting adhesive may seem complicated to some. Fortunately, there are products that will help during renovation work. Multi-purpose adhesives such as Adelastic adhesives can be used.
Adelastic adhesive is a flexible assembly adhesive for all building materials*.
It can be used indoors, outdoors and even on damp surfaces. It is chemically non-aggressive and odorless. It is an excellent and safe choice for construction and renovation works, when we are not sure what materials we are dealing with.
*except PE, PP, Teflon and bituminous surfaces.
